Abstract

Abstract

Slavery, which started with the history of humanity and turned into a commercial institution, becomes a problem that should be questioned with the emergence of concepts such as "independence", "freedom" and "equality". This concept, the importance of which is tried to be emphasized in social life, brings about the contrast between freedom and slavery. Especially the Ottoman intellectual, who meets Western civilization and feels the obligation to keep up with the changes encountered, thinks that some innovations should be made in the world of ideas. For this reason, Tanzimat artists deal with the concepts of "independence", "freedom", "equality" in their works and they handle these concepts by considering the problem of slavery/concubinage in order to reinforce/emphasize their importance. They carry slavery/concubinage, which they see as a social problem and an individual obstacle, into their works and use these themes as a romantic element. Intellectuals criticize their use as a sexual meta by addressing the difficulties, psychological depressions and pain experienced by women who were taken away from their country and family and sold for money. The artists, who reveal the behaviors displayed towards women who are subjected to mental and physical exploitation, emphasize the importance of individual freedom and the necessity of treating human beings according to humanitarian values.
